There was a cool breeze and a slight drizzle of rain as the 200 some runners gathered at the starting line of the first annual Husky Holiday Run. Second Grader Macy McCartney was entered as contestant 612 and positioned next to her Daddy. The Mac's decided to give a go at the mile race instead of the 5K since neither of them like to run! As the runners gathered a red headed kid in Macy's class turned to her and exclaimed, "I run 2 miles a day Macy. I'm going to smoke you."
"Who was that kid?" her Daddy asked. Macy replied, "His name is Duncan. Daddy - I don't think I want to walk in the race any more. I want to run... and I want to win."
"Runner's get set," yelled Principal Anderson, "on your marks... GO!"
At that moment more than half of the runners started to sprint up hill to begin the race. Macy turned to her Daddy and explained that she wanted to win and that we had better get going. Daddy re-assured her that as long as we run at the pace we were at, we would catch Duncan and many more people.
At the half mile mark Macy was really tired. She didn't want to keep running, but she saw that they were about to pass Duncan. She raced by him, but he didn't notice. At the 3/4 mile marker there was a turnaround where the runners at the lead of the pack could then see the faces of those behind them. Macy again wanted to stop running, but shortly after the turn around she saw Duncan and kept up her pace.
"Oh no," he yelled, "Macy is beating me." Duncan was now running fast, but the lead was too big. As Macy and her Daddy got closer to the finish line she once again wanted to just walk the rest of the way. But she saw another boy in her class and before her Daddy could say anything she was running even faster. Macy and her Daddy sprinted across the finishing line in the Top 20 of the entire race with a time of 8 minutes!!! Right after she crossed the line she turned to her Daddy and said, "I think I am going to throw up." Her Daddy once again re-assured her telling her that she was fine she would be... uh... oh! Then Macy's raspberry yogurt came bursting out of her mouth in front of everyone!
"Are you okay honey?" asked her concerned Daddy.
"Yep - I'm fine now. Let's eat some breakfast."
And she did. She told all of her friends and they all thought it was cool. She gave her all... literally!
Her Daddy told her later that day how proud he was of her. He told her that she may have been the only person there that actually did their best and tried their hardest. Some people go their entire lives not understanding what it means to give everything they have. Way to go Macy!!!

Wow that's amazing
Miss Macy, what a fine job. Wow, girlfriend, you are amazing. Did you know overcoming is God's favorite thing? You over came so many things during that race especially Duncan. High five!
She ran her insides out
Made old Duncan pout
Ran like the wind
And made her family grin
Love you Macy, awesome job, we're all busting with pride in you.
Macy Mac: We are all so proud of you here in Chicago. Leading people always starts with performance and you are going to be a great leader. I love your hard-working spirit and perseverance (you can ask your mom about that word).
Oh yeah, one other thing. Great job of throwing up in a neutral spot and not on any Mac people or property. Our boys have not learned that yet. For example, Nickolas introduced the back seat of my car last year with his lunch. See, you are already a leader!
